Metro State DI takes DI Championship with 2 seconds left in Game 3RMCRHA March 4th, 2012 at 7:00PM March 11th, 2012 4:17AM
This ending to a 3-game playoff series for the DI Championship could not be written or made up from any author. One would hope that the DI Championship would not only go to a Game 3, but come down to the closing seconds of regulation to decide the winner. It makes for exciting theater.
In a rematch from last years Championship, Game 1 would go to Colorado State (CSU). CSU took a 4-1 lead after dominating the first period. The second period would find no change to the score as the teams would go into the third period with the same 4-1 score. CSU would score 29 seconds into the 3rd to make it 5-1. About midway through the 3rd, Metro State decided to make a push and would put up three goals in three minutes to bring the game to 5-4. But it wasn't enough and CSU would take Game 1.
In Game 2, the story would be completely opposite. Metro State dominated every period of the game. They had a 3-1 lead after the first, a 6-1 lead after the second, and scored 3 more goals in the third to stomp CSU 9-3. A stellar 6-point performance by the captain Bobby Derian, led his team to the Game 2 win.
Game 3 was the best game of the series. The two teams would keep the score close for the entire game. CSU ended period one with a 2-1 lead. The score would double up for both teams in the second. CSU still had the lead, 4-2. In the third, goals were spread through the period, but all would go to Metro State. They would score two minutes into the period, bringing the score to 4-3. They would tie the game over halfway through the period, 4-4 (3rd and 4th goals to captain Bobby Derian). As the period would wind down, goaltender David Hutt made a great save against a 2 on 1 opportunity for CSU to preserve the tie. As the period would wind down, the game looked to go into overtime. But, Metro State had one more opportunity with the puck. Tommy Derian put the puck on his stick with 6 seconds left in the game. From his own zone, he put a slapshot on the CSU net...the puck hit the goalies glove, bounced over and into the net to score...with 2 seconds left in the game.
Metro State would take the score 5-4, and the series 2-1 to earn their 3rd RMCRHA Division title in a row (2010-DII, 2011-DI, 2012-DI). This will also be Metro State's 4th trip to Nationals in a row, dating back to 2009.
